FAQs

What does DFC stand for?

You might have seen DFC referred to when talking about Encompass. DFC stands for Drug-Free Communities, a federally-funded grant that exists to support community coalitions that work to prevent and reduce substance use among youth. This grant amounts to $125,000 per year for up to 5 years, and was awarded to Encompass in 2023.

The DFC program goals include:

Establish and strengthen collaboration among communities, public and private non-profit agencies, and Federal, state, local and tribal governments to support the efforts of community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance use among youth.

Reduce substance use among youth and, over time, reduce substance use among adults by addressing the factors in a community that increase risk for substance use and promoting factors that minimize risk for substance use.

What substances does Encompass target?

Encompass seeks to reduce substance use across the community, including alcohol, marijuana, prescription drugs, tobacco, and nicotine. Regarding youth substance use, Encompass targets alcohol use and nicotine use.

How can youth get involved?

Members of our community under 18 are encouraged to join our Youth Action Council, and attend our monthly coalition meetings to offer their perspectives on substance use among youth. To join, contact the DFC Program Coordinator, Emily Flavin, at eflavin@town.northborough.ma.us or at 508-504-1770.

How can I get involved?

Encompass membership is open to everyone in our Northborough and Southborough communities! Please see the website calendar for details of our next general meeting, or contact the DFC Program Coordinator, Emily Flavin, at eflavin@town.northborough.ma.us or at 508-504-1770.
