Saving lives means staying informed! Help keep our community safe.

Opioids are a serious concern in our country and our community. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in 2022, the United States experienced 107,941 overdose deaths. 81,806 of these deaths were confirmed to be caused by opioids. In Massachusetts, there were 2,125 deaths caused by opioid overdose in 2023, a 10% decrease from the 2,357 deaths that occurred in 2022. This trend is continuing, as 2024 already shows a preliminary decline in deaths caused by opioid overdose.

Increasing the access to life-saving Narcan and increasing the number of people trained to use Narcan is directly correlated to decreasing opioid overdose deaths. Narcan can reverse an opioid ovedose in 3 to 5 minutes, and allow first responders the time that they need to administer care to the individual experiencing the overdose.

Since the Greater Boroughs Partnership for Health began in 2021, we have distributed over 1,000 doses of Narcan to community members. If you are curious about how Narcan works, how to use Narcan, or need to access free Narcan, please contact the Northborough Health and Human Services Department at 508-504-1770.Our staff is offering free Narcan trainings at our local libraries.  Pre-registration is required.
