The Friends of the Northborough Senior Center 8th Annual Chocolate Spectacular

8TH ANNUAL CHOCOLATE SPECTACULAR
(NOTE TIME CHANGE From December’s newsletter)
The Friends of the Northborough Senior Center invite the public to join the 8th annual Chocolate Spectacular festivities at Whitney Place, 238 West Main St., Northborough, on Saturday, February 11. Please note the change in time, 3 to 5 p.m., from last month’s announcement. (Snow date is Sunday, February 12.)

For a donation of $20, which also includes wine, “you can indulge in all the chocolate you can eat,” says Friends President Carolyn Squillante. Besides the wide variety of chocolate concoctions and baked items, the event will feature a silent auction.

Tickets are available from members of the Friends, at the Senior Center, or at the door. The Friends’ fundraising efforts help the Northborough Council on Aging provide social services and emergency aid to the town’s older residents, and also support activities and programs at the Northborough Senior Center, 119 Bearfoot Road.

Please join us for Birthday Lunch at the Bistro@119.  If you have a birthday in January, the Friends will treat you to a lunch at Bistro@119, which includes a sandwich of your choice, and of course, cake and ice cream.  Even if you’re not celebrating a birthday, we’d love to have you join the festivities.  Please call the Senior Center at 508-393-5035 to make your reservation as a one who has a birthday in January and receive a birthday coupon to be used the day of the birthday lunch at the Bistro@119.

Money Management

The mission of the BayPath Money Management Program is to promote and prolong independent living for low-income elders and disabled individuals by assisting with them with their routine financial needs. This is achieved through the dedicated support of screened and trained volunteers.  Representatives from BayPath Elder Services will be speaking about the program on February 15th at 11:00. They will provide an overview of the program and describe the bill-payer support that is available to residents who are over age 60 and/or disabled and meet program guidelines.  In addition, they will discuss the role of volunteers and how community members can become volunteers in the program.

The Money Management Program provides clients with vital assistance with organizing bills, establishing a budget, advocating with service providers…and more.  This service is free and confidential. Now in its 20th year, the Money Management Program is sponsored by the AARP Foundation, the Executive Office of Elder Affairs, and the Massachusetts Home Care Association.

Brain Power Nutrition

Are you struggling to remember things?  Would you like to think clearly and respond quickly?  Do you feel a fog has settled over your brain?  If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you should attend the Brain Power Nutrition Class!  There are 8 easy steps you can take to turn your brain "on"  Learn the 8 steps  and how to work practical solutions into your daily routine including physiological requirements for good brain health; the "big picture" of you, and your brain in relation to yoru overall health; things you should do every day.  Attendess will see a slide presentation and receive a handout ontaining all the class information; sample meal plan for brain health; a food shopping guide for brain health; and your questions answered!

In today’s world, driving a car may seem to be a necessary part of life, however, owning a vehicle and holding a driver’s license are privileges that come with a great deal of responsibility. Join Michele Ellicks, Community Outreach Coordinator for MassDOT/Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV), for an hour-long program entitled, “Be a Road Scholar.”
Ms. Ellicks will discuss issues facing senior drivers, the Commonwealth’s rules of the road, recent changes that have taken place at the RMV, as well as the warning signs of unsafe driving.  She will also share the requirements to apply for a handicap placard or plate as well as a Massachusetts identification card, the most recent research concerning mature drivers, and  alternative forms of transportation. Learn what’s available in your community.

Portions of the program have been featured on WCVB-TV’s “Chronicle” as well as in the Boston Globe, Patriot Ledger, and Springfield Union News.

Online job search expert Susan P. Joyce has been observing the online job search world and teaching online job search skills since 1995. Surfing the Web for Better Health

Have you tried to look up information on internet on health matters, drugs or dietary supplements?  Do you get confused by the long list of websites that may or may not have the answer to your question?  How do you know which websites are reliable?  Which ones can you trust to give you accurate information?  Your health is important, so any information you receive should benefit you and not cause you harm.

Faculty and students from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Worcester will be offering a series of 3 classes on "Helping Older Adults Search for Health Information Online".  The 3 classes will cover these topics:
                Introduction to Medline Plus
                MedlinePlus: Drugs and Supplements
                Evaluating Health Websites
Each class will last about 2 hours.  It will meet every other week over a 6 week period starting in January.  If you are a senior who already knows how to search the Internet and are interested in attending the class you will need to pre-register.  The number of seats is limited and will be on a first come, first served basis.  If you attend all 3 classes, you will be presented a "Certificate of Completion" and a $30 gift card.
