The Northborough Fire Department utilized Rescue 1 for a wide variety of emergency response duties. Considered by many department members as the most versatile of N.F.D. apparatus, the Rescue carries a full complement of motor vehicle extrication and specialized rescue equipment. Originally a first-response, quick-attack engine, the apparatus was modified and the cab extended to accommodate up to 5 firefighters. The Rescue carries the hydraulic rescue equipment commonly referred to as the "jaws of life" as well as cribbing for vehicle stabilization. Pneumatic air bags capable of lifting loads in excess of 10,000 lbs. are carried in a variety of sizes to affect any number of rescue situations. A foam-proportioning system within the pump provides the rapid application of several different types of foam to be applied
on a array of fire conditions. Specialized tools ranging from reciprocating, all-purpose, cutting tools, to a full assortment of hand and power tools are equipped. In contrast to the specialized rescue equipment, the Rescue as well carries firefighting support equipment and emergency medical supplies including a defibrillator. The Rescue can as well serve to initiate a fire-attack with pre-connected hose lines and a 500 gallon on board tank if necessary, but is often used to provide personnel support in such situations.
