Ladder 1 is designed for a variety of functions. The apparatus carries a full complement of both ground and aerial ladders to provide for rescue or ventilation. The mounted aerial ladder extends 106 ft.: this is useful in situations where the apparatus is not set in close proximity to the structure. Although the primary responsibility for the ladder crew is to provide for rescue and life safety, ventilation is crucial for an efficient fire attack. This is  accomplished by releasing heat and smoke confined in the upper floors of a structure by either natural or mechanical means. Often, a hole must be cut in the roof directly over the fire to prevent the fire from spreading horizontally throughout the structure. Many times confused as unnecessary damage, proper and timely ventilation can often reduce fire loss. The sturdy aerial ladder provides a relatively safe means to accomplish this objective. Ladder 1 carries a variety of tools and equipment to support firefighting efforts on scene. Several power tools such as the K-12 gas powered saw can be used for ventilation or forcible entry. Gas powered Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV's) fans are designed to evacuate smoke and combustion products. Ladder 1 can as well transport up to 7 firefighters with S.C.B.A. and hand tools to the fire scene to support operations and assist with rescue, forcible entry, and ventilation.
